OFFICIAL STATEMENT: MOONSIGHTING NOTICE RAMAḌĀN 2022 (2)
MOONSIGHTING NOTICE RAMAḌĀN 2022/1443
The Presidency of the Muslim Judicial Council (SA), upon consultation with the President of the
Crescent Observers Society, the honourable Imam Yusuf Panday, would like to make the following
announcement.
The probability of sighting the moon with the naked eye, on Sunday 1 May is very low.
The following factors will impact on the possibility of sighting the moon:
The age of the moon at the time of sighting will be 19hrs 37mins.
The duration for sighting the moon will only be 26 minutes.
The crescent moon will be 4 degrees above the horizon at the time of sighting.
The level of illumination of the moon with be approximately 0.01%.
Based on the experience of our dedicated moonsighters who perform this duty every month of
the year, the combination of the above mentioned points will negatively impact on the ability to
sight the crescent moon of Shawaaal. The moonsighters will congregate at the various sighting
stations on Sunday 1 May to perform this very important duty.
The MJC (SA) functions under the Hilaal Committee of the United Ulama Council of South Africa
and all announcements regarding the moon will be done after the broad consultation, In Shā Allāh.
May Almighty Allah accept our fasting, Salaah and good deeds performed in the month of
Ramadhan, Aamin.
