Is Making Origami Shapes Permissible?

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

Origami, which is the art of paper folding into shapes and figures, would be considered permissible when making shapes or figures of inanimate objects. With regards to Origami folding of animate objects, consider the following:

1. Our jurists have ruled that it is impermissible to manufacture anything that resembles a living being; be it human, animal or something unprecedented like a man with wings.
2. The ruling applies to 3-dimensional living beings, as well as 2 dimensional according to the official view.
3. Drawing a living being without essential external body parts would be permissible. By way of example, drawing a head without a body or an entire body without detailing the mouth would be permissible.
4. The only exception to manufacturing complete 3-dimensional living beings would be for young children. Since it’s permissible for them to play with it in as far as it contributes to their nurturing (tarbiyah).
5. In conclusion, Origami of animate objects would be permissible provided one adheres to clause 3 above.

قال في حاشية الجمل على شرح المنهج

(و حرم تصوير حيوان) أي و إن لم يكن له نظير أ.هـ

قال الإمام النووي في شرحه على صحيح مسلم

” و لا فرق في هذا كله بين ما له ظل و ما لا ظل له؛ هذا تلخيص مذهبنا في المسألة، و بمعناه قال جماهير العلماء من الصحابة و التابعين و من بعدهم، و هو مذهب الثوري و مالك و أبي حنيفة و غيرهم و قال بعض السلف: إنما ينهى عما كان له ظل، و لا بأس بالصور التي ليس لها ظل ، و هذا مذهب باطل…أ.هـ

قال في التحفة

 ” نعم، يجوز تصوير لعب البنات لأن عائشة رضي الله عنها كانت تلعب بها عنده صلى الله عليه و سلم، و حكمته تدريبهن أمر التربية ، و خرج بحيوان تصوير ما لا رأس له فيحل خلافا لما شذ به المتولي ..ا هـ

ﻭﻳﺴﺘﺜﻨﻰ ﻟﻌﺐ اﻟﺒﻨﺎﺕ ﻭﻛﺬا اﻟﺼﺒﻴﺎﻥ، ﺃﻱ اﻟﺬﻳﻦ ﻳﻟﻌﺐﻭﻥ ﺑﻪ ﻣﻦ ﺗﺼﻮﻳﺮ ﺷﻜﻞ ﻳﺴﻤﻮﻧﻪ ﻋﺮﻭﺳﺔ

 (و يحرم) و لو على نحو أرض و بلا رأس إذ ما مر بالنسبة للاستدامة و ما هنا في الفعل (تصوير حيوان) و إن لم يكن له نظير ا.هـ

وقال في إعانة الطالبين

 والحاصل: يحل صوغ ما يحل استعماله و يحرم صوغ ما لا يحل استعماله و لا أجرة لصانعه كآلة لهو و آنية نقد أ.هـ
