Balfour Declaration: 100 yrs later and Palestinians continue to suffer

As we mark the 100th anniversary of the dishonorable Balfour Declaration, the Muslim Judicial Council (SA) wholeheartedly supports the call of the Media Review Network (MRN) to mobilize the international community and the United Nations, to pressurize the illegal Zionist entity called Israel, to abandon its racist ideology and to establish a unitary state.

Furthermore, we lend our support to the Balfour Apology Campaign demanding Britain to apologize for its destructive colonial past and change its policy toward Palestine and implement the necessary steps toward restorative justice and peace.

The Balfour Declaration helped establish an illegitimate homeland for the Jews by destroying and displacing the indigenous Palestinian population. The blood, sweat, tears and suffering of an estimated 5 million Palestinian refugees continue to this day.

According to the Palestine Information Network, Balfour wrote in a memorandum, “In Palestine, we do not propose even to go through the form of consulting the wishes of the present inhabitants of the country… Zionism be it right or wrong is more important than the wishes of 700,000 Arabs.”

Britain continues to disregard and is therefore complicit in the gross violation of human rights of the Palestinians, by ‘celebrating’ this day with a state visit of Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.

In South Africa, our struggle for a free Palestine continues. Tonight, the MJC (SA) and Al Quds Foundation, welcomes everyone to our weekly Palestine Awareness programme at Masjidun Nur, Lappert Street, Paarl. Speakers include former MJC President Shaykh Ebrahim Gabriels and 1st Deputy President Moulana Abdul Khaliq Allie amongst others. The programme starts after Magrieb with a specific focus on how the infamous Balfour Declaration changed Palestine forever.
