COMMENCEMENT OF AN INQUEST FOR JUSTICE.
قُلْ أَمَرَ رَبِّى بِٱلْقِسْطِ
Say to them (O Muhammad): ‘My Lord enjoins justice;”
[Sūrah aL-A’rāf 7:29]
The MJC (SA) is pleased at the announcement made regarding the reopening of an inquest into the death of al-Shahīd Imam Abdullah Haron (RA). Imam Abdullah played a pivotal role in the anti-Apartheid movement within our Muslim community and country, and to this day remains a personality of immense pride.
We do, however, highlight our concern that the family of Imam Abdullah and other Apartheid Victims had not been formally consulted nor informed before their matters were made public by the office of the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Honourable Mr. Ronald Lamola.
Since this might not have been a deliberate oversight by the Ministry, we strongly suggest that it remedies this situation to ensure that Imam Abdullah’s family and others be duly consulted and that it avoids any misinterpretation in the future.
Despite this, the MJC is quite satisfied that the inquest is being reopened. Its leadership in particular and the community at large look forward to positive outcomes; it does so with the hope that these would help to heal the wounds that have been caused by the Apartheid authorities.
The MJC wants to stress that we should honour those who strove in the path to attain social justice for all and that we should draw inspirations from their lives as we all face the challenging future.
