DEATH OF THE INNOCENTAND THE DISGRACE OF OUR PEOPLE, WHILE ANGELS KNEW.

The past months we have seen escalations in the degree and extent of violence and brutality on the Cape Flats, culminating with the murder of Abongile Mafalala.

Why did this grotesque killing happen? Fear, socio-economic pressures, racism, mental instabilities, misinformation based upon societal sensationalism, inactive law-enforcement response? These were some of the factors highlighted as possible reasons for the sad events that unfolded… However, there is one unspoken, muted and never mentioned possibility: an inherent violent streak our people seem to be predisposed to.

وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ إِنِّى جَاعِلٌۭ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ خَلِيفَةًۭ ۖ قَالُوٓا۟ أَتَجْعَلُ فِيهَا مَن يُفْسِدُ فِيهَا وَيَسْفِكُ ٱلدِّمَآءَ وَنَحْنُ نُسَبِّحُ بِحَمْدِكَ وَنُقَدِّسُ لَكَ ۖ قَالَ إِنِّىٓ أَعْلَمُ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ ٣٠

And, when your Lord said to the angels, “Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority.” They said, “Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we exalt You with praise and declare Your perfection?”² He said, “Indeed, I know that which you do not know.”[al-Baqarah 2: 30]

What does Allah know about mankind that the angels did not?

That we, mankind is fundamentally good. What happened in Parkwood and continues to happen on the Cape Flats is not our intended conduct, rather, it is the superficial judgement of angels. People  remember, that Allah’s knowledge is All-Encompassing and is aware of what had happened. Societies, families, masājid committees, civil groups, every individual, must have some semblance of introspection and reflect upon this incident and ask: “Have I conducted myself according to the apparent narrative of the angels, or the cavernous intent of Allah, for myself?”

We are deeply grieved by the killings, murders and aggressions that plague our society; and remain opposed to the mob justice mentality and taking the law into one’s own hands. Let us hold accountable the criminals that took this life, as well as instilling an attitude of positive citizenry in our communities. Let’s place accountability where it should be; government, the justice system, law enforcement and ourselves. We call upon our community to stop this violence and work towards finding peace, and a congenial existence.
