MJC (SA) DISTANCES ITSELF FROM THE STATEMENT MADE ON AN MJC WOMEN’S FORUM PROGRAM

The Muslim Judicial Council (SA) notes with concern the views expressed by a representative of
the MJC Women’s Forum on a program aired on Radio Voice of the Cape on Wednesday, 8 June
2022. We categorically state that the view expressed by the Women’s Forum representative is not
that of the MJC (SA) or any of its structures and further state that there is no justification for any
form of violence perpetrated against women or children.

The MJC(SA) and all its structures stand for and hold in the highest regard the safety and
protection of the women and children in our community.

The MJC Women’s Forum, and the Social Development Department in particular are strong
proponents of awareness programs and campaigns on the issue of gender-based violence and
have partnered with numerous organizations who share our commitment and passion in this
regard.

We have since engaged the member concerned where the error of the relevant utterances was
pointed out. After realising the mistake, the member showed remorse, retracted her statements
and offered an unconditional apology for any harm her words may have caused.

Our sympathies and support will always be with the victims and family members living under
the yolk of gender-based violence. We also firmly believe that more needs to be done to protect
our women and children from this social ill plaguing our society.
