UPDATE ON MEMORANDUM ON SAFETY & SECURITY IN WESTERN CAPE

The MJC (SA), the Interfaith community and Civil Society wish to update the community regarding its 15th September 2022 engagement with stakeholders on the subject of safety and security in the Western Cape.

Follow-up emails were sent to the Minister of Police and his Provincial and National Commissioners, the City of Cape Town and the National Prosecution Authority (NPA) with specific questions directed at them in the memorandum.

Thus far the MJC(SA) received a detailed written response to the memorandum from Mayor Geordan Hill-Lewis and the City of Cape Town. We appreciate their willingness to assist in the process of developing an effective response to the kidnapping crisis in the Western Cape.

Furthermore, we have received a commitment from the SAPS Provincial Commissioner that a consolidated response to the issues raised in the memorandum will prepared by their Strategic Management component in due time. As a gesture of their commitment, SAPS dispatched Deputy District Commissioner for the West Metropole, Brigadier C.
Jones to further engage the MJC (SA) and the Faith Community to strategize how SAPS and Faith leaders can work together to address crime in the province.

The MJC(SA) and its stakeholders have yet to receive a response from the NPA regarding the points specific to them in the memorandum but will continue with weekly follow-ups until a response is secured.

The Western Cape continues to be plagued with serious crimes such as murder, kidnappings and extortions, the latest being, among others, the kidnapping of a Ukrainian national in Blackheath, Anichka Penev, who was taken from her place of business of Thursday morning, 29 September 2022.

We beseech Almighty Allah to bring peace and stability to our province and country and may all those who have been taken from their loved ones be returned safely, Aamin.
End
