In May 2022, the MJC youth department partnered with Samura Jiu Jitsu and sponsored the World Masajid Association of Sunnah Sports (WMASS) – Wrestling division. WMASS, akin to FIFA for the World Cup, served as the event provider, while Samura Jiu Jitsu functioned as a participating team. The MJC approved sponsorship for 30 mats to train youth and adult males at the Samura Jiu Jitsu club. Since then, Head Coach Shuaib Khan and his team have been dedicatedly training youth in jiu jitsu and wrestling.

The vision of the WMASS wrestling division has been to host submission grappling events as a distinctly Islamic activity, recognized globally. The synergy between these entities, bolstered by support from the MJC youth department, played a crucial role in realizing the inaugural submission wrestling masajid event on Sunday, 7 July 2024, at Islamia High School Hall. The event exceeded expectations with over 100 entries and 154 spectators, surpassing the organizers’ target of 50 participants.

Additionally, the event featured 8 age and weight categories, alongside a fitness competition hosted by Ml Saalim Peck Uli Ba’s. It commenced at 8 am and concluded just before magrib salah.

Looking ahead, the organizers aspire to expand this sunnah sport, recognizing its myriad benefits for youth, with the goal that every masjid will eventually boast its own wrestling team, in sha Allah.
